Long before hypebeasts and the comfort-prone inhabitants of NYC began donning their best $600 hoodies for street style photographers and their barre class rivals, the hoodie had a convoluted past. The roots of the modern hoodie can be traced back to Medieval Europe when monks wore robes adorned with a hood (then referred to as a cowl) to depict their profession and create visual unanimity.

It wasn’t until the 1930s that the hoodie made its way to New York, produced by Champion as a uniform of sorts, designed to keep warehouse workers warm in frigid conditions upstate. Later, the evolution of hip-hop culture throughout the ‘70s disseminated the hoodie into mainstream fashion.

Today, despite its centuries-long history and lasting social affiliations, the hoodie is a wardrobe staple that spans both style and generation. In the thick of the COVID-19 outbreak and weeks-deep in the WFH lifestyle, we wear our hoodies in solidarity with our fellow Zoomers and our social-distancing peers, embracing our new reality that is life indoors.

If you’re like us — online-shopping despite your indefinite confinement — a new hoodie is a piece you’ll wear on repeat now and post-quarantine. Ahead, we’re sharing the best hoodies for women and all the brands worth keeping an eye on as we settle further into a slower life at home.
