Can you tell us about your relationship with ikebana? I spent a month in Japan traveling through the countryside. I walked around for hours visiting pre-edo towns that implemented permaculture techniques very early on, shrines, and flower farms. I’ve never felt so close to nature in my life. In Kyoto, I visited the first school of Ikebana and immediately knew this was going to be a lifelong practice for me.
How were you first introduced to fashion? I was born in the Philippines, and I remember watching my grandma sewing since she was the local seamstress in our village. Then when my sister and I would play outside in our corn and mango fields I would make outfits out of husks and leaves and branches and use the dye from red gumballs for lipstick.
Are there any elements of your style that pay homage to your inner-child? I grew up as a huge tomboy playing a lot of sports early on but was still a total nerd. My dad would usually help me pick out an outfit in the mornings and I looked like I was half ready to go to the scholastic book fair, go on an archaeology excavation, and play street hockey or soccer all at once. The continuity of that playfulness and practicality is definitely important to me.
How has your career influenced your style? I’ve worked in many different work environments from selling high-end vintage to repping Helmut Lang at Saks, to working in bookstores in the sci-fi and gardening sections to wardrobe styling, to selling Marc Newson furniture to making flower arrangements for events and art galleries. My interests in art, fashion, and nature have definitely lead me to all these unique experiences that have definitely influenced my style.
What do you hope to achieve personally when you get dressed each day? I always strive for that ‘effortless’ look when I’m getting dressed.
Who do you admire style-wise? Rihanna, Solange, Susie Bubble
What are your favorite items in your wardrobe? Do they differ from the items you wear most? A vintage Commè Des Garcón jacket that consists of multiple striped men’s shirts layered and sewn over each other and the Jacquemus La Robe Maman Dress, and my Margiela tabis. I wear my tabis the most, I can wear them with pretty much everything. The commè jacket I like to wear over a dress or with a T-shirt and jeans every once in awhile... and the Jacquemus dress is still in its garment bag... I’m too afraid to take it out!!!
What does your closet look like? Mostly old or new? Minimal or a bit of everything? My closet is a mess! I have 2 Muji bins of vintage clothes I absolutely cannot get rid of, and the rest is newish. A lot of Helmut Lang, Yohji, Dries, some Row pieces.. and then just a bunch of random and amazing T-shirt’s that my friends make for their own skateboard lines or shirts for the Grateful Dead.
What are some of your favorite stores in LA? OK, Virgil Normal, H Lorenzo Archive, The Good Liver, Assembly, What Goes Around Comes Around, The Way We Wore, Noodle Stories
